VPI focuses on developing an innovative ecosystem for Vietnam's oil and gas industry
The Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI) has determined its strategy is to become the nucleus in developing, operating and thriving an innovative platform to help the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) take the utmost advantages of all resources, competitive advantages to realize energy transition and digital transformation, ensuring their efficient, stable and sustainable development, at the same time to capture every opportunity in the new context of the energy market to create breakthroughs.

Over 45 years of development, VPI has become the leading scientific and technological organization of the Vietnam oil and gas industry, being capable of carrying out R&D and providing scientific and technological services to the whole value chain of petroleum industry. VPI has conducted studies and services being valuable scientific basis for shaping the oil and gas development strategy and policies and counseling the Government and Petrovietnam in the whole range of oil and gas activities of exploration, production, transportation, storage, processing, environment & safety, and management.

The intellect of Petrovietnam making its mark in 45 years of VPI establishment and development.

Especially, from 2008, in response to the radical context, especially to the demand for a breakthrough in management to liberate the creativity and prepare for the future when the scientific and technological market really takes shape, VPI has boldly transformed its operational model into an autonomous and self-managing public scientific and technological institution. This important move has created a substantial change, linking scientific research and technological development with production, business and training, boosting technological application and transfer, and contributing to enhancing the scientific and technological strength of the oil and gas sector. However, being totally new with no precedent in Vietnam, this model of operation and management has created certain pressures on VPI’s revenue, jobs as well as affected the deployment of its basic, long-term and strategic research tasks. In spite of this, VPI has decisively changed its mindset, developed and deployed numerous drastic measures by the learning-while-doing approach, adjusting to fit with actual situations while actively implementing the transformation.

In upstream sector, VPI concentrates on prospecting and exploring conventional/non-conventional oil and gas; conducting researches on geological structures, assessing hydrocarbon potential and reserves of sedimental basins; developing applicable solutions for production operation, enhanced oil recovery, and safe and efficient field management.

From the baseline survey studies, VPI has developed a reliable and constantly-updating scientific database of hydrocarbon potential and reserves of the territorial waters and the continental shelf of Vietnam to facilitate the formulation of development strategies and policies for the oil and gas upstream; and propose measures for the State to manage and rationally exploit the marine resources and environment in a scientific and efficient manner, satisfying the demand for a sustainable economic development and contributing to safeguarding the national sovereignty and national security.

Alongside the implementation of research to develop Petrovietnam's five core areas, VPI is focusing its resources on urgent issues related to the development of the petroleum industry to adapt to the trends of digital transformation and energy transition, such as: Building an innovative platform for digital products; building an Oilgas AI ecosystem using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) algorithms to synthesize, represent, and analyze in-depth data in the petroleum industry and various products such as crude oil, gasoline, LPG, and natural gas; training and developing skills in applying available AI services... VPI has carried out studies anticipating the energy transition trend in the petroleum industry, such as processing CO2-rich gas, hydrogen, offshore wind power, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCS/CCUS), etc.

With the strategic direction of developing into the national leading energy group and having a pivotal position and role in ensuring energy security, Petrovietnam considers science - technology and innovation as a top priority for it to truly become a lever to create breakthroughs in productivity, quality, efficiency, and competitiveness of Petrovietnam and its subsidiaries.

These demands become even more urgent as science and technology need to be one step ahead, rationally combining applied studies and basic research. Only then can we ensure the sustainability and viability of our development strategy and create breakthroughs to enhance competitiveness.

VPI - in collaboration with the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) under the US Department of Commerce, US Embassy in Vietnam - organizing a workshop on building a legal corridor to promote CCS/CCUS projects in Vietnam.

Regarding the direction to form and develop a creative ecosystem for the Vietnamese petroleum industry, Dr. Nguyen Anh Duc, VPI General Director said, VPI is currently building the team to develop innovative platform for digital/physical products (business analytics, expertise, data and analytics, experimental analysis), and the team to innovate digital/physical products in core technological areas: advanced technology exploration; potential and reserve; management support and production optimization; efficient energy usage; carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS); green hydrogen/ammonia, etc.

In addition, VPI is also developing the "Vietnam Petroleum Insights" system (VPInsights) to meet the demand for searching, studying and sharing insights about the petroleum industry. The system ensures the provision of complete, accurate, and timely information with a user-friendly natural language interface to quickly facilitate the process of asking, accessing, and analyzing information. The system is built on the latest artificial intelligence (AI) advances such as large language models (LLM) and generative AI, integrating the knowledge and experience of petroleum experts over the past VPI's 45 years as well as 60 years of Vietnam oil and gas industry, along with a huge amount of global data and intellect. VPInsights will help VPI/Petrovietnam experts and partners both domestically and internationally not only to access and use digital products and collaborate, but also contribute to the common petroleum intellect ecosystem - supporting timely and effectively in situation forecast and solution planning in the constantly changing context of the global energy industry.

With 45 years of establishment and development, with the pride of a Labour Order Winner, VPI will spend its resources on oil and gas scientific research, training, and technological applications, converging world-class intelligence, creating value-added in science and technology, and training human resources for the Vietnamese petroleum industry, which all support Petrovietnam to develop sustainably, enhance its competitiveness through optimizing production and business operations, and making breakthroughs in the application and innovation of intellectual property assets.

Since 2012, VPI has been granted patent No. 011318454B1 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the invention "Method and system for renewing spent fluid catalytic cracking (SFCC) catalysts using acid leaching and acid reflux activities", 6 patents and 11 utility solution patents by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam - Ministry of Science and Technology.
