Within the framework of the Meeting, the Ministry of Energy of Brunei has handed over the chair of the 40th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Energy to the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Cambodia under the role of ASEAN Chair in 2022 of Cambodia. The meeting updated the results of implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) for 2016-2025, phase 2 (2021-2025), cooperation with dialogue partners and international organizations, updated on priority issues for 2022 in the ASEAN energy sector and prepare for the 40th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting.

On behalf of ASCOPE, Secretary General Tran Hong Nam presented the implementation status of the 2022 plan for Trans ASEAN Gas Pipeline Project in the overall ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) phase 2 (2021-2025) with the result that total length of pipelines connecting 6 countries (Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam) was 3,673 km and 9 LNG centers reached total capacity of 38.75 million tons/year, an increase of 20.95 million tons/year compared to 2015.

In 2022, ASCOPE continues to promote cooperation opportunities with the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) in researching tax incentives to increase the use of small-scale LNG and in shipping. In addition, ASCOPE and the International Energy Agency (IEA) plan to organize a workshop on the European energy crisis and lessons learned for the ASEAN gas market, expected in August.
The Meeting highly appreciated ASCOPE’s update on the ASEAN Gas Pipeline Linking Program as well as the work to be implemented in the near future. The ASCOPE report will continue to be developed for presentation at the 40th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) held online from 12th to 16th September 2022.
