46th ASCOPE meeting with the theme “Recover Faster, Grow Stronger”
On 25th October 2021 afternoon, the 46th meeting of the ASEAN Council on Petroleum (ASCOPE) was co-chaired by Pertamina - Indonesian National Oil Company and ASCOPE Secretariat with the theme “Recover Faster, Grow Stronger”, organized online for the first time since ASCOPE establishment in 1975.

The meeting was attended by CEO of National Oil and Gas Companies/Heads of state management agencies on oil and gas of 10 ASEAN member countries, ASCOPE Secretary General, Coordinators of countries and 04 Heads of ASCOPE Subcommittees.

On behalf of Vietnamese side, Petrovietnam attended the meeting as a member of ASCOPE, led by Vice President Le Ngoc Son and representatives of the Group’s Divisions and ASCOPE Secretariat (that Petrovietnam has been in charge since the end of 2019).

With the theme “Recover Faster, Grow Stronger”, the 46th ASCOPE meeting is where the Council members come together to share experiences in solving the challenges posed to the oil and gas industry in the context of the global energy transition and the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the opening speech, Ms. Nicke Widyawati - President Director & CEO of Pertamina underlined the importance of ASCOPE to foster collaboration among oil and gas companies in the ASEAN, especially orientation in addressing the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and promoting energy transition.

At the CEO strategic session, ASCOPE members shared practical experiences in the countries as well as initiatives to translate “challenges into opportunities”, once again affirming the 46th ASCOPE meeting message “Recover Faster, Grow Stronger”.

Being authorized by President and CEO Le Manh Hung, Petrovietnam Vice President Le Ngoc Son, ASCOPE member of Vietnam gave a presentation on Vietnam’s energy transition trend, Petrovietnam's strategies and solutions in the context of the global energy transition and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.Speaking at the meeting, ASCOPE Secretary General Tran Hong Nam emphasized that natural gas should be affirmed as a key role in the context of strong energy transition. Up to now, ASCOPE’s Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline Project (TAGP) has connected 6 ASEAN member countries through 13 gas pipelines with a total length of 3,631km and 9 LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) terminals with a total capacity of 38.75 MTPA. At the meeting, ASCOPE members exchanged specific contents on energy transition, towards ensuring security and sustainable development in the region. 

Mr. Keisuke Sadamori, Director of Energy Markets and Security at International Energy Agency (IEA) presented an update on the global energy transition. He said despite the largest annual increase in global CO2 emissions in 2021, at around 1.5 billion tons, the IEA has seen a positive signal that global oil and gas companies are stepping up spending on clean energy with the proportion of investment capital increasing to 4% in May 2021. 

In order to promote ASCOPE’s activities, Secretary General Tran Hong Nam and Heads of Sub-Committees reported on work progress in 2021 and planned activities for 2022 in line with Key Performance Indicators. On behalf of the Exploration and Production Subcommittee, Mr. Pham Thanh Liem, Head of the Subcommittee and Deputy Head of Exploration Division of Petrovietnam reported on activities of the Subcommittee including the plan for Guide to Field Clearance Publication (1st revision) in 2022. 

The ASCOPE members highly appreciated the ASCOPE Secretariat, Sub-Committees and Country Coordinators’ efforts to promote ASCOPE’s activities in the context of the recent Covid-19 pandemic and hoped that all ASCOPE members would continue to cooperate closely in the coming time towards the sustainable and effective development of ASCOPE.
