PVSM’s Transformation Journey Through Landmark Projects

Emerging from historical challenges, PetroVietnam Shipbuilding and Mechanical Company Limited (PVSM) has steadily asserted its position in the shipbuilding and offshore engineering sector. With a series of successful high-profile projects—ranging from constructing vessels for European clients to overhauling massive offshore rigs—PVSM is demonstrating its internal capabilities while repositioning itself as a major player in Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry.

In 2020, PVSM received the Dai Hung 01 rig for overhaul. This massive unit measures 108.2 meters in length, 67.36 meters in width, with a main deck length of 68.6 meters, a maximum draft of 21.3 meters, and a total displacement of 9,880 tons.
Despite the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, PVSM successfully completed a substantial scope of work, including full underwater cleaning, welding nearly 5,000 meters of pipelines, and overhauling all mechanical, electrical, and process equipment. After overcoming the “dual crisis,” the rig was delivered to the client in full working order.

PVSM also undertook the repair and conversion of the Galilean 7—once the largest oil tanker ever docked in Vietnam. With a deadweight ranging from 180,000 to 320,000 tons, a length of 334 meters, a beam of 58 meters, and a draft of 11.4 meters, the vessel was entrusted by a Nigerian owner for conversion into a Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) unit.

The completion of the Galilean 7 project marked a key milestone for PVSM, helping elevate Vietnam’s reputation in the global shipbuilding arena.

In 2023, PVSM further proved its capacity by constructing four barges for Kraken, an Australian shipowner. The barges were built in full compliance with the design and technical standards set by the client.

Over a span of four months, PVSM completed and delivered all four barges. The company managed the entire process—from design review, detailed engineering, technology planning, production layout, material take-off, to overall project execution.

In 2024, PVSM continued to win international trust, securing a contract to build a series of four 5,000 DWT multipurpose vessels from a Dutch partner. Each vessel measures 99.96 meters in length, 13.6 meters in width, with a hull height of 6.8 meters and a draft of 5.2 meters.
These new-generation vessels are powered by hydrogen and other clean fuels. PVSM received the design from CMT Engineering (Romania), with classification by RINA (Italy), and executed the project in accordance with the client's specifications.

The ongoing execution of this vessel series marks a significant advancement in PVSM’s green technology capabilities and reinforces its strategic position in the modern shipbuilding landscape.

The Murmanskaya rig, owned by Arktikmorneftegazrazvedka.Josc (Russia), measures 88 meters in length, 66 meters in width, with a platform height of 9.7 meters and leg length of 146 meters. PVSM has been entrusted with three maintenance and repair campaigns for this rig.

While rig repairs previously took between 75 to 180 days, PVSM completed the Murmanskaya overhaul in just 45 days—thanks to meticulous planning and extensive experience in tasks such as valve maintenance, steelwork, and coating.

Another notable achievement was the overhaul of the Tam Dao 01 rig. Towed into drydock on April 23, 2023, the project was completed in just 65 days—five days ahead of schedule.

The Tam Dao 01 rig measures 64.2 meters in length, 68 meters in width, with a platform height of 8 meters and a drilling depth of 6,000 meters.

By the end of 2024, PVSM embarked on the conversion of the MT Cawthorne—one of Southeast Asia’s largest oil tankers—into an FSO. With a deadweight of approximately 318,000 tons, the project underscores PVSM’s capacity for complex fabrication and has further strengthened its reputation among global clients.

These high-profile projects not only validate PVSM’s technical prowess but also reflect its robust growth in Vietnam’s maritime sector and its rising global footprint. Despite ongoing challenges, PVSM is steadily demonstrating resilience and a strong trajectory toward sustainable development.
