BSR launches new batch of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)

(PetroTimes) - On June 4, Binh Son Refining and Petrochemical Joint Stock Company (BSR) held a ceremony to launch and successfully deliver its first commercial batch of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This event marks a significant milestone in BSR’s journey toward researching and developing green and sustainable energy products.

The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Department of Industry and Trade, the Department of Agriculture and Environment, Quang Ngai Provincial Police, and Vietnam Aviation Fuel Company Limited (Skypec). Representing BSR were Mr. Bui Ngoc Duong – Chairman of the Board of Directors; Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang – General Director, along with members of the Board of Directors, the Executive Board, the Supervisory Board, the Refinery Management, heads of departments, and staff involved in SAF R&D and production.

Launching ceremony and sale of the first commercial batch of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at BSR on June 4, 2025.

The first SAF batch was produced using imported European feedstock and domestically produced Jet A-1 fuel from BSR. The initial commercial recipient was Vietnam Aviation Fuel Company Limited (Skypec), which will supply the fuel to Vietnam Airlines flights.

On March 31, 2025, BSR was granted two key certifications: ISCC CORSIA and ISCC EU by SGS Germany GmbH. These globally recognized certifications cover blending, production, storage, and commercialization of SAF. In parallel, BSR also completed its technical documentation, internal production and blending processes, and established its corporate standard TCCS 23:2024-BSR.

Holding ISCC certification enables BSR to export SAF to international markets, particularly the EU, where emissions and renewable energy standards are among the world’s strictest. These certifications affirm BSR’s commitment to sustainable, environmentally responsible production and serve as a foundation for expanding strategic partnerships and commercial contracts with sustainability-focused stakeholders.

Dung Quat Oil Refinery representative handed over SAF products to Skypec Company, marking the formation of the first SAF supply chain in Vietnam.

To prepare for production and commercialization, BSR finalized the SAF blending scheme, upgraded infrastructure at the tank truck loading station and storage facilities, and completed product quality management and testing protocols at the refinery.

BSR also collaborated closely with Skypec, airlines, and logistics providers to develop a pilot SAF supply chain—from transportation and fueling to quality control at delivery points.

“This event signifies the establishment of Vietnam’s first closed-loop SAF supply chain—from feedstock import, blending, and quality control to distribution to aviation fuel providers and airline operations. Moving forward, BSR plans to scale up SAF production and begin full-scale commercialization in Q4/2025,” said Mr. Hoang Thanh Son, Head of BSR’s Research and Development Department.

Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang - General Director of BSR affirmed his determination to commercialize SAF, contributing to the national energy transition strategy.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang - General Director of BSR emphasized: “In response to global energy transition trends and Vietnam’s Net Zero carbon commitment, BSR has outlined a roadmap to develop and produce SAF using existing infrastructure. Our SAF is blended from sustainable base components (SBC/Neat SAF) and Jet A-1, developed in accordance with Jet A-1 standards and enhanced with ASTM D7566 specifications to ensure suitability for aviation turbine engines. This product has been included in the list of Petrovietnam’s key energy solutions.”

BSR is proud to be one of the pioneers in commercializing SAF, aiming to provide clean energy solutions for domestic and international airlines.

The successful sale of the first 5% SAF blend confirms that BSR’s systems for production, blending, and quality management meet the standards required for SAF supply. It also demonstrates the integration of the entire value chain—from production to blending and distribution—with all stakeholders ISCC-certified. This serves as a critical foundation for the future development of SAF in line with global energy transition goals and Vietnam’s climate commitments.

BSR executives and stakeholders also visited the SAF dispatch area at the Dung Quat Refinery.

“This milestone affirms Petrovietnam’s determination to implement Resolution 57-NQ/TW on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation. We are proud to be among the first to commercialize SAF, contributing clean energy solutions to the aviation sector in Vietnam and beyond,” Mr. Nguyen Viet Thang reiterated.

As part of its SAF development roadmap, BSR is also expanding international cooperation. In March 2025, BSR signed a consulting agreement for a pre-feasibility study on SAF production with Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), a global leader in energy technology and engineering consulting, in the United States.

The sale of the SAF Sustainable Aviation Fuel product batch is a milestone marking a new step forward for BSR in its journey of researching and developing green and sustainable energy products

The successful delivery of this SAF batch is a landmark achievement in BSR’s mission to develop sustainable energy products. At the ceremony, delegates witnessed the handover of SAF products—accompanied by quality certification—from Dung Quat Refinery to Skypec, for use on Vietnam Airlines flights. This also reflects BSR’s commitment to energy transition and the long-term vision of building a green, sustainable refinery.
